My first computer had 32k of RAM, ran at 4MHz and had a colour screen of 256 x 192 pixels. I saw the premier of Star Wars when I was 22. We were using pen-plotters to produce our technical drawings in the 80's. Our mainframe could print digitised photos in over-typed ASCII on long strips of fan-folded "eyeline" paper. Our refrigerator-sized tape drives used 19-inch open-reel tapes with servo-operated dust covers behind motorised sliding doors and sipped 3 to 5kW of 3-phase power. We swapped disk packs on exchangeable-disk drives the size of a chest freezer. Our room-full of hard-drives had 3,6Gb of capacity. One sealed 300Mb hard-drive disk assembly without electronics weighed 22 pounds and cost exactly the same as a Volkswagen Combi/Microbus.
